Polyurethanes are produced using the isocyanates MDI (Methylene diphenyl diisocyanate) and TDI (Toluene diisocyanate). Although these isocyanates create inert products with tremendous benefits, they must be handled with care.

 

Isocyanates are reactive, low molecular weight chemicals. MDI and TDI are generally liquid materials and have low vapour pressure.  They are reactive to water and are classified sensitizers. It is advisable to avoid direct contact with the material since it can cause sensitivity to humans. Direct contact with the material happens by inhalation, eye contact, skin contact and swallowing. Sensitivity to chemicals or repeated exposure can increase the sensitivity or can cause hypersensitivity.

 

The “Walk the Talk” programme was developed by ISOPA (European Diisocyanate and Polyol Producers Association) to improve health, safety and environmental standards in the European polyurethanes industry. The programme focuses on safety through exchange of information.
