Safe handling of MDI and TDI
Polyurethanes are produced using the isocyanates MDI (Methylene diphenyl diisocyanate) and TDI (Toluene diisocyanate). Although these isocyanates create inert products with tremendous benefits, they must be handled with care.
Isocyanates are reactive, low molecular weight chemicals. MDI and TDI are generally liquid materials and have low vapour pressure. They are reactive to water and are classified sensitizers. It is advisable to avoid direct contact with the material since it can cause sensitivity to humans. Direct contact with the material happens by inhalation, eye contact, skin contact and swallowing. Sensitivity to chemicals or repeated exposure can increase the sensitivity or can cause hypersensitivity.
Eliminate risk - “Walk the Talk”
The “Walk the Talk” programme was developed by ISOPA (European Diisocyanate and Polyol Producers Association) to improve health, safety and environmental standards in the European polyurethanes industry. The programme focuses on safety through exchange of information.
Its successful implementation achieves three key targets:
Training raises employee awareness on safe processing of chemicals and handling as well as maintaining plants and machinery.
The programme keeps users up to date on safety issues and addresses the implications of REACH.
It strengthens the image of the chemical industry as a whole through transparency, credibility and a positive reputation.
All aspects of safe handling, health, personal protection, transport, storage and environmental information relating to isocyanates can be found in the “Walk the Talk” brochure prepared by ISOPA. The brochure is available in 23 languages.

Material Safety Data Sheets
Like every BorsodChem chemical, isocyanates are delivered with a
Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)
. These datasheets can be found wherever the material is being used.
An MSDS contains instructions for use and safe handling of the substance and information such as physical data, toxicity, health effects, first aid, reactivity, storage, disposal, protective equipment and spill-handling procedures. Chemical risks and the effect on the environment are also included.
